Sod is grass that a grower has planted, grown, and harvested to be installed elsewhere. The grass and a small layer of soil is cut and delivered in flat rectangles or small rolls ready for installation.
WATERING TIPS FOR MAINTAINING NEW SOD
We can help you plan a good watering schedule based on your specific soil and irrigation system, but here are some basic general guidelines:
- Once the sod is installed, the soil should be kept moist but not soggy so the roots can become established and keep the grass healthy.
- For the first week, you should water several times a day but for short amounts of time. Look for signs of dry spots and hand water those areas.
- Continue to water daily for the second week but for fewer times each day. You’ll still need to look out for any signs of dry spots and water those areas by hand as needed.
- After the second week, you can slowly transition to your regular watering schedule of 2-3 times per week.
MOWING TIPS FOR YOUR NEW SOD
Don’t mow your new sod until the roots have had a chance to become established. This usually happens in about two weeks.
When you mow, don’t remove more than a third of the grass blade. More than that will place undue stress on your new sod.
And make sure your mower blade is sharp for the least amount of stress on the plant as well.
FERTILIZE FOR STRONG ROOTS
About a month after installation, once the roots have started to develop and you’ve transitioned to a regular watering schedule of 2-3 times per week, you should apply fertilizer to provide the proper nutrients your new sod needs to stay healthy and grow strong roots.
